Clean Bay Collective is a community-powered effort to understand, protect, and celebrate Alamitos Bay.

Led by Algalita Marine Research and Education, the Collective brings together neighbors, students, families, and long-time locals to take meaningful action for the waters we all depend on.

Alamitos Bay is one of the most beloved places in our urban ocean, full of history, wildlife, recreation, and community memory. But it’s also at risk. Changes in water flow, ongoing pollution, local development, and the realities of life in a busy coastal city make it more important than ever for the community to stay informed and involved.

Clean Bay Collective exists to make that possible.

We create simple, accessible ways for people to:

  • Contribute to Science — Collect water samples, learn about local ecology, and contribute data that helps us understand the bay’s health.
  • Take Action — Join cleanups, participate in hotspot walks, and get involved in hands-on activities that make a real difference.
  • Make Connections — Explore stories, history, and perspectives from the people who know and love Alamitos Bay.

You don’t need a science background or any special experience to be part of this. If you care about the bay, you’re in the right place!

The Collective is guided by Algalita’s long-standing commitment to community-powered science and environmental education. Our goal is to bring people closer to the places they love, amplify the realities of our local waters, and build a stronger connection between what we see here at home and the health of the larger ocean beyond.

Together, we’re creating a more informed, engaged, and connected community—one that has the tools, knowledge, and shared purpose to protect Alamitos Bay for generations to come.

Welcome to the Collective. Let’s take care of our bay, together
